(Chinese-American 1971-)
Jianwu “Jason” Tan was born in Hunan, China in 1971. His parents were civil servants with no artistic leanings, but Jason fondly recalls “they gave me the greatest support and encouragement when they found out I liked painting”. Jason graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Hunan Normal University and later studied under the Spanish master of realism Antonio Lopez-Garcia, the Swedish realist Nick Alm, and China’s own ultra-realist Leng Jun (b. 1963).
Tan states he found his initial motivation toward art in his desire to convey “the beauty around me that I felt…..and painting was the only way I could use.” His inspiration came from the neoclassical paintings of David, Boucher, Alma-Tadema, and Andrew Wyeth whom Tan calls “my idol” and says of his paintings “always combine profound emotions with exquisite techniques, and there is a magic in the painting that can never be forgotten after a glance.” Tan’s works advocate the neoclassical style and focus on portraiture.
Tan was awarded the title of "Outstanding Meritorious Artist" by the Rodin International Artists Foundation in 2019. In 2017, his work Love Song won first place in the 13th Portrait Society of America, 2017. In 2019, my work Drunk Red won first place in the figurative art category of the 14th International Art Renewal. His works have been published in many professional journals in China and abroad, and reproduced as postage stamps and telephone recharge cards issued by China Post.
Tan is currently a director of the Artist Committee of the China Cultural Management Association, a director of Overseas Chinese Artists Association. a Signature Status member of the Portrait Society of America, a member of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors (Asociación Española de Pintores y Escultores, AEPE), a member of the Beijing Oil Painting Society, a researcher at the Beijing Zhongguancun Art Research Institute, and the founder of the Chinese New Figurative Oil Painting Salon and the first and second chairman.
Jason Tan currently lives and works in Queens, New York.
